Until now McDonald’s didn’t offer vegetarian burgers in the USA. Certain of McDonald’s burgers, salads, and wraps are customizable, and it is possible to order them meat-free. Still, these customized items were not designed to be vegan or vegetarian and may lack the taste you are looking for. That is why we were very excited to learn that McVegan option is introduced to McDonalds’ Chicago headquarters location.
Previously available only during a test run in Tampere, Finland and limited number of Norway locations, McVegan proved to be a solid option on the menu. In fact, McVegan test run went incredibly well. It is reported that over 150,000 McVegan burgers were sold in just one month.
McVegan recipe was carefully selected based on a review of more than 100 vegan recipes by a dedicated tasting panel. Soy-based patty was chosen with multiple toppings including fresh onions, sliced tomato, and shredded iceberg salad. Special eggless sauce recipe is used.
Another vegetarian (not vegan) burger is being tested in Sweden and Finland. The burger is named Veggie Tasty and also features a soy protein-based patty with Emmentalers melt cheese, lettuce, fresh red onion, and sliced tomato. It also comes with vegetarian Big Tasty sauce.
Both burgers can be purchased together with McFalafel nuggets, which is another vegan option on McDonald’s menu. McFalafel nuggets are available in Sweden and Finland. McDonald’s Egypt location also sells McFalafel wrap.
Plant-based burgers are a new hot trend in the international food industry. Competition for meatless burger heated when Burger King rolled out an Impossible Burger – a meatless burger. The need for the meatless burger is urgent enough that a petition asking McDonald’s to introduce a meatless option to the menu gathered more than 160,000 signatures.
